If there’s one music label to keep an eye on at the moment, it’s Ivy League. So far this year, the Aussie label has brought us the likes of Palms, Green Buzzard and R.W. Grace – all rising acts that seem destined for the big time in the very near future. Continuing on this little hot streak of theirs, they’ve just unveiled their latest signing: meet Rolling Blackouts, your new favourite soft punk outfit. The Melbourne quintet have been crafting their own blend of angsty punk with slightly softened, angular melodies since 2014, even scoring some coveted Triple J rotation with their debut track “Clean Slate”. Brand new single “Wide Eyes” kicks off with a warped, sputtering guitar and synth combo, as frontman Fran Keaney’s charismatic vocals ride underneath the noise, backed ably with poppy guitar plucks and melodic drum progressions. As the track comes to a close, it quickly descends into a sort of controlled chaos, with long drum fills and a pretty bitchin’ guitar solo that serves as a final confirmation of their obvious talent. Who knew punk could be this damn catchy?
