It’s that time of year again when the first whiffs of spring and hints of summer sun start to grace us with their presence. So it’s perfect timing for one of Australia’s most loved indie-dance trios, Crooked Colours, to release a project sure to soundtrack all the activities that the coming warmer seasons hold (including the summer festival circuit!). The Fremantle outfit’s third studio album, ‘Tomorrows’, is a sonic reflection of the trying times of the past few years, containing dance floor-ready, emotional odysseys.
Crooked Colours continue their awe-inspiring creativity on ‘Tomorrows’, which has arrived off the back of their number one album, ‘Langata’ (2019). Their indulgently rich dance-pop soundscape is presented up front, with the record’s first tracks — “Love Language”, “Holiday”, and “Feel It” — each offering up the dance floor buzz we’ve come to know from the band; fans are reminded of the ecstatic feeling of having a boogie and going on an adventure, finding a true escape from the world.
It’s not all high energy dance tracks that feature on ‘Tomorrows’, though. The band also explores a present a more heartfelt side on “Homecoming” and “Don’t Give Up On Me”. Both hold a central message of love — either from missing those that you care for the most, or vying for someone’s affection. These mixed feelings are wrapped in lush textures, dynamic vocals and poignantly downtempo production.
The title track for the album encapsulates the premise of the project through a tension-building introduction before breaking into uplifting and groove-filled beats. It’s for this reason it stands out as a highlight, along with the track before, “Moving On”. The atmospheric production and the empathetic vocals of both let the sentiment linger after the song has ended. When listening to this LP, it’s easy to feel at ease with the familiarity of Crooked Colours‘ soundscapes and the space their music continues to hold.
