Oliver Tank has been killing it in the Sydney circuit for years, his paced-out electronic beats casting a spell over listeners — if you’ve ever had the chance to see one of his mesmerising live sets, you know. Since releasing his ‘Slow Motion Music’ EP (which features the phenomenal Ta-Ku collab “Different Speed”) in 2013, we’ve been blessed with a few remixes from the producer, his rework of Solange’s “Cranes In The Sky” last year leaving us hanging for more.
The wait is over, though, with “Swerve” arriving late last year as part of new material promised. The track is signature Tank, down-tempo with lithe percussion and graceful vocals melting through each layer. Violin on the track, played by Triple J Unearthed artist Wren, contrasts against warm harmonies, slow builds and heart-on-sleeve lyricism: “I’m nervous/I’m hurting/My voice feels uncertain.” The new video for the cut, directed by talented local filmmaker Aislinn Lowe, translates the ambience perfectly, and features a pair (one half being local beatmaker Yemisul) traversing stunning landscapes, flares in hand and gravity at bay.
Last night, Triple J premiered Oliver Tank’s new single “Charlene”, and it was as dreamy as expected, so keep an eye out for when it’s available online to play over and over again.
