Sydney’s Gang of Youths are the Australian band to watch. The four-piece formed in 2012 and their rise to the top of the local indie-rock scene has been nothing short of remarkable. The release of their first single “Evangelists” in 2013 garnered a lot of attention from Triple J, pushing them into the public eye. Slews of tours and sold-out shows followed, culminating in the ridiculous support spot for none other than NYC chart-toppers Vampire Weekend. Since then they have been busy recording their debut album, which has been completed and is set to be released early this year. The first fruits of the album “Poison Drum” and, most recently, “Benevolence Riots” are gritty with emphasis placed on the stunning vocals from frontman Dave Le’aupepe, backed by absolutely filthy guitar licks and drum progressions. GOY effortlessly combines the catchy with a sense of rawness and depth. Whilst not particularly mimicking the sounds of The National or even Aussie rock legend Nick Cave, the comparisons are very much tangible. Gang of Youths are a band on the rise and we are predicting that 2015 is going to be their year.
