Melbourne-based singer and producer Martha Brown is the genre-hopping musical shapeshifter operating under the moniker Banoffee. With a diverse little back catalogue including hits like the cheeky “Let’s Go To The Beach”, the contemplative, jarring “Got It” and the dreamy “Ninja”, it’s difficult to pin down a distinct sound for an artist obviously keen to stretch out and explore new sonic territory. After a year of silence, Brown has released “With Her”, a hushed, piano-led electro-pop anthem co-produced with none other than tour mate and creative spirit animal Oscar Key Sung. Oscar’s influence is quickly apparent, from the bouncing, relaxed 80’s/house flavour to the epic spiritual synths that eventually bring the track to a close. “Baby I just don’t get it / Do you enjoy being hurt?” Brown croons, borrowing lines from Mario’s huge early noughties’ radio hit “Let Me Love You”. It’s a fitting little throwback for an intoxicating blend of classic RnB melodies and modern, shuffling house production.
