Brisbane’s underrated electronic wizard Charles Murdoch has officially returned after two (painful) years of downtime. Back in the limelight after a powerful collaboration with VIVID and the Sydney Opera House (if you haven’t already, score a free download here), the humble genius has shared his downtempo deep house track “Straws”. it’s an urgent four minutes of whispered vocal runs and a continuous warping hook, melding effectively over an organic-sounding, percussion-imitating beat. The accompanying video is a perfect fit, depicting a right-wing gang member’s psychological struggle with supressing his sexuality for fear of being ostracised from the community. Handled by progressive German collective Jünglinge, it’s a moving introduction as the first segment in an upcoming three-part short film series. Everything just feels right again with Murdoch back on the scene…
